Get your helmets on…
In case you missed it, fans of sex, violence and intrigue in ancient times should check out the first season of STARZ’ Spartacus: Blood and Sand — really, get the whole season on Netflix and plan a weekend of brutality and debauchery, yet with serious drama. This is a very different show than HBO’s Rome, so don’t expect polished marble steps and scenes at the senate; instead, prepare to look from an over-the-top gritty side of the gladitorial House of Batiatus… it ain’t pretty (well, sometimes it is very pretty actually), but it’s epically fun. Among the many actors, Lucy Lawless is in it (Xena fans) and this is a radically different role for her.
The first two episodes aren’t great (just setup really), but man after it gets rolling it’s an excellent ride that will have you going WHOA at times. The lead actor got cancer and had to drop out (very sad, as he was stellar here), so it took a while to recast, but the next season starts in January, called Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.
Can’t wait.
